Shenzhen
was established as a Special Economic Zone in 1980. Before
this, Shenzhen was a small village in South Guangdong Province.
As the earliest and fastest growing Special Economic Zone
in China, it has won the reputation as “The Window”
of China’s opening-up drive and the “Pilot Field”
for the country’s economic restructuring.
The rapid growth of the local economy owes a great deal of the vigorous inflow of overseas investment and expansion of foreign trade.
Between
1980 and 2003, GDP of Shenzhen enjoyed an average annual growth
of 33.3%. In 2004, its GDP reached $42.8 billion, ranking
the 5th among all mainland cities, while per capita GDP ranked
the 1st in the nation. Its total import and export amount
was $147.3 billion, including an export value of $77.9
billion which ranks the 1st among all mainland cities for
12 consecutive years, and import of $69.5 billion. By
the end of 2004, the FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) reached
$41.2 billion.
