Capener, Cole R., is an adjunct professor of law with Law School, University of Utah and the President of Capener Enterprises.

Mr. Capener began his legal career as an associate in the New York office of Shearman & Sterling, and after practicing law in Salt Lake City for two years, joined the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie in January 1986. Mr. Capener became a partner in the firm in 1989 and has worked in the firm’s Beijing, Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Palo Alto Offices. (He withdrew from the firm at the end of 2001 to pursue various international venture capital and non-profit activities). Mr. Capener’s legal practice has focused on assisting multinational clients in connection with their investment activities, primarily in Asia and in the People’s Republic of China. In 1993, he advised on the first stock purchase transaction to be approved by the central government authorities in China. He has advised on numerous other cross-border mergers and acquisitions involving assets in China and other countries.

Mr. Capener is admitted to practice law in New York, California, Utah and Hong Kong.

Fluent in Chinese Mandarin, Mr. Capener is the author of many publications on Chinese legal topics including the seminal treatise on mergers and acquisitions in China, A Guidebook to Mergers and Acquisitions in China.

Mr. Capener received a B.A. magna cum laude (and Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of Utah in 1978 and his J.D., with honors, from the George Washington University National Law Center in 1981.
