James Tong
Associate Professor
University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA)

Tong, James, is an Associate Professor in Comparative Politics at UCLA.

Mr. Tong taught at the California Institute of Technology and the Michigan State University prior to joining UCLA. He managed the annual Greater China Economic Conference for the Anderson Forecast, 2001-03, served as the Director of the Center for East Asian Studies, 1996-2002, and Vice Chair of the Department of Political Science, 1994-97. Since 2000, he has administered the 12-month training session for 6-10 Senior Civil Servants from Shenzhen every year at UCLA.

Mr. Tong has received research grants from the National Science Foundation, Frank Guggenheim Foundation, Henry Luce Foundation, and University of California Pacific Rim Research Program for his projects on Political Culture and Participation in China, Fiscal Reform in China, the Asian Financial Crisis and Collective Action. He is winner of the 1986 American Political Science Association's Gabriel Almond Award for Best Dissertation in Comparative Politics.

Outside UCLA, Mr. Tong is the editor of the journal Chinese Law and Government, and has served as a consultant for the World Bank project on fiscal reform in China. He is Vice President, Hong Kong Association of Southern California, and has served as External Assessor, University Grants Committee, Hong Kong Special Administrative Regional Government since 1998; External Examiner for Graduate Degree candidates, Graduate School, the Chinese University of Hong Kong since 1991.

He got his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and M.A. from the University of Washington.
